Section 19845
- Note: Must register for 4.0 units. What made the conquests of Alexander the Great possible and what was their impact on the eastern Mediterranean states and societies? The purpose of this class is to introduce the student to the history and culture of what is called the Hellenistic period, starting with the conquests led by Philippe and Alexander the Great, kings of Macedonia (4th c. BC) and ending with the death of Cleopatra VII and the annexation of Egypt by the Roman emperor-to-be, Augustus (30 BC). This course also offers a basic hands-on introduction to reading Greek inscriptions for students with no previous knowledge of ancient Greek (or of any other ancient language).
