Health and Healing

Section 64846

  • Note: "Health and Healing" is a writing course in which we will learn how to engage with issues in the fields of medicine and health care with rhetorical, analytical, and ethical force. It is a course that will allow students to follow their own interests and passions, whether it be the latest developments in the science of nano-surgery, the ethics of human testing for medical research, or popular representations of doctors in the media. Through all of our studies, we will be working with a set of key concepts that will encourage students to approach questions of health and healing through a combination of historical and sociological analysis. Over the course of the semester, we will develop a critical framework that allows us to view our objects of study not as unchanging "givens" but as complex historical and cultural constructions open to human intervention and invention.
