Dr. Anastasia Kayiatos will address the Pussy Riot phenomenon in the context of contemporary Russia and global protest culture.
Anastasia Kayiatos will address the recent Pussy Riot phenomenon in the context of contemporary Russia and global protest culture. Seizing on the infectious quality of their performances, she will flesh out connections to earlier forms of viral intervention by HIV/AIDS activists in the 1990s, thereby restoring some of PR’s radical queerness back to prominence. Pitting the grrl’s gaga politics of virality against Putin’s politics of patriotic virility, she will examine the autoimmune response on the part of “the Putin system,” as PR’s Nadya named it, as a way of reimagining Russia into consensual community through shared risk and immunity in the wake of Putin’s divisive reelection.
