Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, the Paris Review, Best American Essays, Granta, and The New York Times Book Review. Hampl has received many awards, among them grants from the National Endowment for Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1990 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship.
