The founders of the world’s first modern full-scale casino-resort originally built and promoted Monte Carlo not as a gambling town, but as a curative health spa. This paper traces the history of Monte Carlo, founded in 1863, while considering how the casino’s management capitalized on the power of visual culture to create an image of their resort as a center of cosmopolitan glamour, sophistication, and leisure.
