USC Marshall Society and Business Lab December Lunch & Learn: Base of the Pyramid (BoP) Job Development with Maria Springer, Co-Founder & Executive Director of LivelyHoods.
Co-Sponsored by USC Enactus (Formally USC SIFE) LivelyHoods fosters economic development in urban slums by providing job training to young people. LivelyHoods developed a door-to-door sales agent network in Nairobi, Kenya that employs youth to sell solar lamps and cook stoves to urban slum residents. These products offer cost-savings in addition to improving the productivity and health of those living at the poverty line. Maria Springer co-founded LivelyHoods in June 2011. Prior to that she served as the Executive Director of KITO International. Previously, Maria worked with the Spanish Department of Justice and the AFSCME labor union. Maria earned her B.A. in Political Science from UCLA. She is recognized as a StartingBloc Fellow, a Cordes Fellow, an Unreasonable Institute Fellow, and as a Global Social Benefit Incubator Fellow. The Lunch and Learn series exposes the USC community to issues of social and environmental importance and how business solutions can be used to approach these issues. RSVP is requested; complimentary lunch is served.
