Conference Summary:

This year’s conference — “Where Is Learning?” — explores learning along a continuum, from the traditional face-to-face classroom to all-online classes.

Conference participants will learn about teaching strategies and the technologies that support learning in a range of places, with a deliberate focus on collaboration, student engagement, and authentic and situated learning.

The day will kick off with a keynote presentation by Tracy Fullerton, director of the USC Game Innovation Lab and associate professor in the School of Cinematic Arts. Fullerton will discuss an experimental learning game called Reality Ends Here, recently featured in Wired magazine. Dubbed “life-changing” by students, this game immersed incoming freshmen in the creative culture of the School of Cinematic Arts through social learning challenges.

The lunchtime keynote speaker will be Doug Thomas. Thomas is an associate professor in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism; he is also the co-author, with John Seely Brown, of A New Culture of Learning. Thomas will share ideas from this book — notably, the notion that the world is changing faster than our skills. In this connected world, the challenges we face require new systems of thinking and sensibilities, and play will increasingly be the way in which we cultivate imagination and spur innovation.
