The Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Unruh Civil Rights Act.

The evening will feature discussions looking back at Speaker Unruh's leadership and the passage of this landmark civil rights legislation, as well as the next set of civil rights laws facing California and its people.

  • Ruthee Goldkorn, Californians for Disabilities Rights, Ms. Wheelchair California 2001
  • Ange-Marie Hancock, associate professor of Political Science at the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and author of The Politics of Disgust and the Public Identity of the "Welfare Queen" (2004, New York University Press)
  • Michelle Lee, junior at USC, majoring in Political Science and Sociology and minoring in Human Rights
  • R. Shep Melnick, Tip O'Neill Professor of Politics at Boston College, a leading scholar on the role of courts in the policymaking process
  • Araceli Ruano, former senior policy adviser on Al Gore's presidential campaign and assistant political director to the vice president and policy adviser to Tipper Gore
