Karla Kirkegaard studies poliovirus as a model to increase the understanding of positive-strand RNA viruses.
For many viruses, RNA, not DNA, is the carrier of genetic information. Karla Kirkegaard, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, studies the biochemistry, cell biology and genetics of RNA viral propagation. Her research focuses on poliovirus as a model to increase the understanding of positive-strand RNA viruses.
