Reframing Your Child's Behavior

Finding the Silver Lining

Thursday, October 9, 2008 : 11:30am to 12:30pm

University Park Campus
Fishbowl Chapel

Free

Parents, learn how to find strengths — and a silver lining to reinforce — in virtually any situation.

When children behave in a difficult manner, parents may have a hard time remaining positive. This session will explore ways to cope with virtually any behavior a child exhibits, including yelling, cheating and non-compliance. The discussion will also address ways to communicate the positive elements of a behavior without giving a child the message that the problematic elements are acceptable.

In this group, parents/participants will identify positive elements of any behavior, and learn how to highlight and reinforce behavioral strengths and improvements without condoning problem behavior.

Any USC faculty and staff wanting to enhance parenting knowledge and skills are welcome to attend.

This interactive discussion group will meet on the second Thursday of each month, 10-11:30 A.M., at the University Religious Center Fishbowl Chapel. Topics will vary each month, and participants can choose to attend the groups that most interest them.

The group facilitator will be Jason Sackett, a licensed clinical social worker and employee assistance professional with the USC Center for Work and Family Life. He consults regularly with faculty and staff on a wide range of parenting, child development, family relationship, and behavioral management issues.
