Independent publishers, artists, writers and designers attend a vital, historically charged event probing the role and importance of independent media.
12-4 p.m. Bazaar, Harris Hall Courtyard
1-2:30 p.m. Panel, Gin D. Wong Auditorium, Harris Hall 101
A one-day-only, one-of-a-kind event featuring an influential group of independent publishers, artists, writers and designers whose voices and images have pushed the boundaries of popular culture, and other cool stuff.
Today, a few large corporations control publishing and distribution, and independent publishers are rapidly going out of business. What are the dangers of corporations deciding what we are able to buy and read? Who will continue to publish new material without compromise? Who is the audience for independent publishing? What is the impact — and potential benefit — of digital technology for today’s small publishers?
To address these questions and more, a dynamic panel will be presented featuring Bruce Caen, artist, publisher and author of Sub-Hollywood; Joe Carducci, writer, producer and former A&R executive of SST Records; Brian Kennon, artist and owner of 2nd Cannons Publications; Rachel Kushner, critic, novelist and editor of Soft Targets; Aaron Rose, artist and publisher of ANP Quarterly; and Emily Roysdon, artist and editor of LTTR; and V. Vale, founder and publisher of Search & Destroy and RE/Search.
Additionally, a festive and free-wheeling bazaar will feature smart, fun, cool, strange, beautiful, outrageous, indiosyncratic, rare, limited edition, hard-to-find, much coveted and bound-to-be-important books, magazines and objects from many of the finest independent artists, publishers and vendors around. The bazaar will also include a DJ set by Wendy Yao, artist and owner of the store Ooga Booga in L.A.’s Chinatown. Plus, free food from a taco truck!
Organized by Ewa Wojciak and Michael Ned Holte (Fine Arts).
