Two exemplary endeavors in contemporary feminist publishing will come together to explore the state of feminist discourse as it emerges in the form of online publications, handmade zines and printed magazines. Jessica Hoffmann and Daria Yudacufski, co-publishers/co-editors of make/shift, a national magazine that creates and documents contemporary feminist culture and activism, will describe their efforts and the broader state of feminist media. Afterwards, participants will join Margarat Nee and Kim Riot of Grrrl Zines A Go-Go for a picnic lunch and hands-on zine-making workshop.

Make/shift is a national independent magazine that creates and documents contemporary feminist culture and action. Made by an editorial collective committed to antiracist, transnational and queer perspectives, make/shift has been called “the most outstanding print-based feminist magazine in the United States” (The Feminist Review). Jessica Hoffmann is a freelance writer/editor and activist who has contributed to numerous publications, including ColorLines, AlterNet and the anthology We Don’t Need Another Wave: Dispatches from the Next Generation of Feminists. Daria Yudacufski was formerly the publisher of LOUDmouth and is currently the managing director of USC’s Visions and Voices.

Grrrl Zines A Go-Go is a small group of women that organizes zine- and book-making workshops. Based in San Diego, their primary focus is the empowerment of teenage girls through the production of zines and artist books. Margarat Nee published the zine OYA: a feminist rag from 1993 to 1995, and has continued to support the causes of women and community arts through art-making and arts organizing. Kim Riot is a big two-wheel enthusiast. She writes the zines Grrrl Noire and Cyclette and is also a freelance music journalist.

Organized by Holly Willis (Cinematic Arts) and Lisa Bitel (Gender Studies). Co-sponsored by Gender Studies, the Institute for Multimedia Literacy and the LGBT Resource Center.
