Joins us for a dynamic and interactive evening of pioneering animation-based installations and performances, featuring radical and lyrical new works from the John C. Hench Division of Animation and Digital Arts. Explore the brand new School of Cinematic Arts' theatres, lobbies and courtyards in search of large- and small-scale animated spaces. These installations will represent the diverse spectrum of contemporary animation and digital arts, reshaping the way we see and think in an evanescent digital era. USC associate professor Sheila Sofian will project her digital animation, Waving the Flag, a critique of patriotism during wartime. MFA student Deborah Allison will screen Sally, an animated projection that effectively confronts the viewer’s perception with its uncannily realistic depiction of a defiant young girl holding a lit cigarette. Live performances featuring animated bodies will be presented inside the facility’s theatre. Mosca, a seamless hybrid of dual-screen animation and live performance by USC professor Christine Panushka and noted performance poet Beto Araiza, traverses new interdisciplinary territories. Steven Day's IAMBR is an exploration of identity in real and virtual space that combines live performance with animation to provide an experiential component to synthetic imagery. These are just a few of the provocative performances and installations that will be featured. Plus, throughout the program, attendees will be able to reflect on the works and engage with the artists in a real-time online discussion via laptops stationed throughout the complex. Organized by Lisa Mann (Hench Division of Animation and Digital Arts).
