In events at the University Park and Health Sciences campuses, William Rector will read from his first volume of poetry, Bill. Rector, a physician and head of gastroenterology at Kaiser Permanente in Colorado, writes with compassion and intellect about what it means to be a physician in the 21st century. Rector will be joined by the poets Alex Lemon and Cody Todd. Lemon is an acclaimed writer whose poetry collections include Hallelujah Blackout and Mosquito. Todd is a USC graduate student whose chapbook To Frankenstein, My Father was published by Proem Press.

 

William Rector received a BA from Yale and his MD from Creighton University. He then joined the faculty at USC as an assistant professor of medicine. Rector was recruited by the University of Colorado in 1985, where he served as an associate professor of medicine in the department of gastroenterology. In his academic career, Rector published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and published the book Complications of Chronic Liver Disease. As a poet, Rector’s works have been published in the journals Prairie Schooner, FIELD, Denver Quarterly, Colorado Review, Cimarron Review and Poet Lore. He published a volume of poetry entitled Bill and is the poetry editor of the Yale Journal for Humanities in Medicine.

 

Alex Lemon received an MFA in creative writing from the University of Minnesota. He is the author of several books, including the poetry collections Hallelujah Blackout and Mosquito and the forthcoming memoir Happy.

 

Cody Todd received an MFA in English and creative writing from Western Michigan University and is currently pursuing a PhD in English literature and creative writing at USC. His poetry chapbook, To Frankenstein, My Father, was published by Proem Press.
