The basics of reading and writing modern Chinese; intensive reading and writing of paragraphs, essays and stories; extensive reading of beginner-level authentic materials.

Introduction to the major humanities traditions of China, Japan, and Korea through an examination of representative works drawn from literature, aesthetics, philosophy, religion, and historical writing.

Practice in the basic vocabulary and idioms of foreign trade and other commercial transactions in Mandarin.
