At USC, we believe that public service helps you broaden and deepen your vision of our local and global community. During Welcome Week, as part of the Volunteer Center’s Friends and Neighbors Day, the university will host a community-based immersion program for incoming students. This intellectually centered, culturally diverse and civically engaged experience will promote awareness of social problems in our local community and encourage participants to take action toward positive change. Participants will receive information about the SCitizen program during summer orientation.
Participants will be exposed to diverse ethnic and cultural communities and issue areas in an intensive day-long session of social, cultural and political exploration. Faculty, staff and community leaders will facilitate discussions and reflections throughout the project and all groups will present their experiences and findings at the end of the program.
All participants will receive SCitizen certificates of completion at the close of the initial projects and will be encouraged to continue participating in SCitizen and other service projects throughout the course of the year.
